ADAPTED ACTIVITY
Description of Original Activity
In the textbook, Pathways 2, Chapter 1, Vocabulary Section D, the students are required to complete each of the ten sentences with the correct word or phrase that was previously listed in Vocabulary Section D. Below are images of A and D, respectively. The language skill focused on in this section is the ability to understand the meaning of a vocabulary word/phrase from its context and to be able to identify and use correct word form (including verb conjugation). Given that student understands how a word differs across each part of speech and knows how to properly conjugate verbs in different tenses, then this is a simple practice exercise—if they do not, then this task is very difficult.

Strenghths
The strengths of this activity are that it:
-
Applies to the student- health will play a major factor in their lives as long as they live
-
Tests critical thinking skills- students must be able to understand meaning from context
-
Exposes different final -s sounds- “provides” (-s) vs. “diseases” (-es) are examples
-
Requires students to recall vocabulary- this helps students commit them to memory
Weaknesses/Adaptations
The weaknesses of this activity are that it:
-
Neglects to remind students of (or teach) word form rules
-
Neglects to remind students of (or teach) conjugation rules
-
Neglects to include an answer key- could have been implemented at the end of the book including the answer to every odd number or every other answer
REVISED ACTIVITY
Objectives: Students will be able to…
-
Understand meaning of vocabulary words and phrases given a definition and context.
-
Utilize word form rules to change a word from one word class to another (i.e, noun to verb, “analysis” to “(to) analyze”
-
Identify tense differences and be able to show proper tenses in sentence formation.

Instructions:
-
Teacher and students complete activities A-C from Pathways.
-
Teacher provides the handout titled “Word Classes,” explaining the instructions and answering any questions.
-

-
Upon completion of the worksheet, the teacher goes around asking each pair for an answer to each of the questions, the teacher corrects them and clarifies if necessary, and students correct their answers if necessary.
